Configuring users for Pocket POS

In order for the Pocket POS devices to function correctly, we need to create a Windows User Account (1 account for each pocket pos device) on the Windows server that will have limited access. Since wInner Pocket POS runs physically on the server, we have to avoid the users of the Pocket POS devices gain access to the server.

Therefore a Pocket POS user, will be able to log-onto the server, which automatically starts the Pocket POS application (and nothing else). No other options are available to the user, ONLY Pocket POS. Even when the user exits the Pocket POS application, the connection to the server will automatically be closed.

In order to create Pocket POS users, proceed as follows:

  1. From the Start Menu, select Programs, the Administrative Tools.

  2. Select Active Directory Users and Computers.

  3. On the Tree node called Users right-click with the mouse, select New, New User.

  4. The new user window appears. Enter the Name details and the User Logon Name details. Then click Next.

  5. If wanted, you can set a password. For Pocket POS users, we advise not to set a password since this user code will be set to only launch Pocket POS and nothing else. Setting a password will also cause unnecessary typing on the Pocket PC device to log-on. Also set the option Password never expires in order to avoid the user of the pocket pos device to get stuck having to change passwords. When done, click Next.

  6. The user account has now been created. In order to set the properties, click the Users node in the left pane tree, select the user in the list at the left, and right-click the user name and select  Properties.

  7. The user properties window appears. Select the Environment Tab. Select the option Start the following program at logon. In the Program file name field enter following command:
    c:\winner\programs\pocketpos_startup\start_pp.bat

This will cause the log on to the server to automatically launch a Batch file that creates a W: Drive for the active session, and start the Pocket POS application.
It also causes the session to automatically log-off when the Pocket POS program is quit.

  8. Select the Terminal Services Profile Tab. Ensure that the Allow Logon to Terminal Server option is Checked.

  9. Click the Member Of Tab. Add the Administrators group to the list. This may seem a security risk, however there is no concern since this user profile will ONLY start pocket POS and nothing else. Adding the administrators group will ensure that the Pocket POS application will not suffer from any user rights restrictions that may exist on the server.

  10. When done, click  OK.

  11. Close the Active Directory program.
